Your step-by-step guide to creating a thriving closed terrarium
We’re so excited you’re here! Whether you’re new to plants or already obsessed, this guide walks you through building a balanced, beautiful, low-maintenance terrarium that’s totally beginner-friendly.

What’s Included in Your Kit
- Premium Glass Jar with Acrylic Lid
- Layers: Decorative pebbles, horticultural charcoal, growing substrate
- Softscape: Moss, assorted plants
- Hardscape: Rocks, decorative pebbles
- Extras: Springtails, assorted decorations or figurines
Let’s Build Your Terrarium
Step 1: Pebble Layer
Add a layer of decorative pebbles to the base of your jar. Push them towards the edges, leaving space in the centre.
Why: This adds texture and visual interest. While some consider it a drainage layer, it’s best not to water so much that water pools—this can lead to root rot.
Step 2: Charcoal Layer
Place horticultural charcoal into the centre.
Why: This acts as a natural filter, helping absorb odours and toxins to keep your terrarium fresh.
Step 3: Substrate
Add your growing substrate on top, shaping it to flow naturally—create gentle slopes for a more natural look.
Why: Most surfaces in nature aren’t flat. Adding variation creates depth and visual interest.
Step 4: Plants & Rocks
Place your larger rocks first, then plant directly into the substrate. Taller plants go at the back.
Tips:
- Use odd numbers (3 rocks, 5 plants, etc.) for a balanced look
- Combine tall and low plants to create depth
- You can gently divide most plants to create smaller ones

Step 5: Add Springtails
Sprinkle the springtails on top of the substrate before placing your moss.
Why: Springtails are tiny, helpful hexapods that feed on mould and decaying organic matter. Their population adjusts naturally, helping maintain balance in your terrarium.
Step 6: Add Moss
Gently press moss onto the substrate.
Why: Moss doesn’t have roots—instead, it absorbs nutrients through its leaves and attaches via tiny hair-like structures.
Step 7: Decorate
Use decorative pebbles to create paths, texture, or ponds, and add your chosen figurines—or leave it simply green.
Why: This is your chance to make it uniquely yours.
Step 8: Water & Close
Lightly mist with filtered, boiled (cooled), or rainwater. Then place the lid on your jar.
Why: Tap water contains chemicals that can harm your moss, causing it to discolour or even die.
You're Done!
Place your beautiful terrarium in a bright spot, out of direct sunlight. Your mini ecosystem will now settle into a natural rhythm of moisture, growth, and self-sufficiency.
