Closed Terrarium Care Tips

Closed terrariums are low-maintenance, perfect for beginner plant parents. They create their own self-sustaining micro-environment, which means less work for you and more time to admire your mini masterpiece.

Light

Pop your terrarium in a bright spot with indirect light—like near a window, but out of direct sun. Too much sun = too much heat, and your plants won’t love that!

Water

Your terrarium naturally recycles moisture. If the glass fogs up in the morning and clears by afternoon—it’s doing its thing! Water only if:

  • The soil looks dry, and
  • There’s no condensation on the glass

Usually, a light mist (few teaspoons) of filtered, boiled or rain water every 4–6 weeks is plenty.  Normal tap water contains elements that can be harmful, particularly to your delicate moss, causing it to discolour or even die.

Too much moisture?

Your terrarium might be holding too much humidity if:

  • There's constant condendsation on the glass
  • The soil or moss feels soggy

If that's the case, just slide off the lid for an hour or so to let some of the moisture escape.

Worried you'll forget to pop the lid back on?  Just wipe away the excess condensation with a soft cloth instead.

Maintenance

As with all gardens, your terrarium plants will continue to grow.  Keep your mini garden looking fresh by trimming and tidying as needed.

What Are Those Tiny White Critters?

No need to panic! Your terrarium contains springtails—tiny white hexapods that live in the soil. Think of them as your built-in clean-up crew.

They feed on mould and decaying matter, keeping your micro-environment balanced, healthy and beautiful. Totally harmless and super helpful!
